  I recall hearing a long time ago that tantalum caps do in fact tend to &lt;br&gt; grow metallic whiskers inside, between the plates, which ultimately &lt;br&gt; bridge the cap. Whether it&#39;s tantalum or some other metal used in &lt;br&gt; construction, it is a poor conductor, and in a power supply, will &lt;br&gt; immediately burn out and the cap will return to normal.   I&#39;ve only had one thing where the contacts wore out and that was &lt;br&gt; decades old.   If they are placed along inner walls the room temperature is uneven. &lt;br&gt; Since heat escapes through walls, windows &amp;amp; doors you need to replace &lt;br&gt; it. Then, the center of the house will stay warm from convection &lt;br&gt; currents and the lower heat loss through a ceiling or roof.
